100% Waterproof New Testament! The Outdoor Bible - Sportsman's Edition: Published by Bardin & Marsee Publishing

At first glance this New Testament looks like an ordinary Sportsman's Edition, but in reality it's any thing but ordinary. THE OUTDOOR BIBLE® Sportsman's Edition is 100% waterproof, and weatherproof inside & out. It can be rained on, snowed on or dropped in a lake without being damaged. When I first read this on the publisher's website I was more then a little sceptically. I have tested this New Testament for myself, and have found that this it is not only 100% waterproof but also the most durable Bible I have ever seen.

About the binding & cover
The cover of THE OUTDOOR BIBLE® is made from 100% plastic material. The spine is very sturdy, durable, and well glued. This New Testament will maintain its form during everyday use and is resistant to normal outdoor wear and tear. Size - 4.25” x 7” Weight - 14.4 oz.

Whats in side?
THE OUTDOOR BIBLE® Sportsman's Edition has lots of features designed especially for Sportsmen. The text size is 7 point type, black letter edition. This edition does not include subject headings. THE OUTDOOR BIBLE® is printed on 100% plastic material, which makes the pages 100% waterproof. The ink is 100% waterproof as well.

How to care for your OUTDOOR BIBLE®
THE OUTDOOR BIBLE is adversely affected by temperatures above 150* F. If you live in a hot climate do NOT leave this Bible in the car. (remember what happens when you leave a VHS tape in the car.) If the THE OUTDOOR BIBLE® freezes while wet thaw before opening. Water will cause the pages to stick to one another, but once dry they will return to their original condition. The DuraBook format can be dried with a towel or by standing on the spine with the pages up. Petroleum product can cause the ink to smear so keep it way from all such products. The ink is 100% waterproof, but some of the ink did smear when I touched it after using hand lotion. Waterproof not lotionproof. Personally I don't see this as a problem, but I thought it would be a good idea to point this out that way people would know to wash their hands before touching the ink. Though I can't see sportsmen using hand lotion, but you never know maybe their wives or girl friends do. I would like to note that the text is still very readable.

About this Translation
The King James Version (also known as the Authorized Version) is viewed by many as the most beautiful & purist translation of the Holy Bible. The King James Version is also very poetic, especially the psalms. 2011 will mark the 400th anniversary of the King James Version, which was published in 1611. There is certainly a lot of history behind this translation, the history alone would require several posts. To find out more about about the history of the King James Version please go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KJV

My Personal Opinion
I've always said that someone should publish a waterproof Bible. I'm glad that Bardin & Marsee Publishing has finally made this a reality. A waterproof Bible is not only a good idea for outdoor use, but is perfect for someone with severe allergies. If you have sever allergies, and asthma you know that just a small amount of allergens can cause an asthma attack. (which isn't fun) I've had many books that I wish I could rinse off. Especially my old Bibles, which I cant use any more because of allergens. I love that if this Bible gets allergens on it, I can just rinse them off. I absolutely love the God's Country® Late Season cover, which matches very well with my woodland camouflage purse too cute. The size & weight of this Bible makes it easy to travel with. Even though I'm not a Sportsmen, I have really enjoyed the features of this Sportsman's edition. (especially the hymns) One day I would like to see the Revised Standard Version- Catholic edition or the New King James Verison in this type of format.

The Sportsman's Bible HCSB with Zipper (Camouflage): Published by B&H Publishing

The Sportsman’s Bible contains numerous devotions written for hunters and fishermen that connect the timeless principles of God’s Word with the passion of millions of North American outdoors enthusiasts.

About the binding & cover
The cover of this Bible is Bonded Leather, with Mothwing™ fall camouflage. The bonded leather this Bible is made from feels more sturdily, and durable, then any bonded leather Bible I have held. The zipper & zipper slide are a very sturdily, which reminds me of the zippers & slides my parents used in their upholstery shop. They only used high quality zippers & slides. Over all I would say that this Bible should prove to be very durable. I'm impressed that this Bible is so well made considering the price Trim Size: 5.74 X 7.78 X 1.18

What’s inside?
Inside this Bible you will find lots of features & tips written for hunters & fishermen.
The
text is 7 point type, with the words of Christ in red. There are subject headings in this edition which I find to be a blessing. The page edges are the same color as the zipper and are both non-reflective. Specially designed so they won’t scare game.

About this Translation

The Holman Christian Standard Bible is an English translation of the Bible, published by Holman Bible Publishers. The first full edition was completed in March 2004. This translation a Optimal Equivalence Translation below is more information on this translation from Wikipedia.

"Holman Bible Publishers assembled an international, interdenominational team of 100 scholars and proofreaders, all of whom were committed to biblical inerrancy.[4] The translation committee sought to strike a balance between the two prevailing philosophies of Bible translation: formal equivalence (literal, "word-for-word", etc),, and dynamic or functional equivalence ("thought-for-thought"), The translators call this balance Optimal Equivalence.According to the translators, the primary goal of optimal equivalence translations is "to convey a sense of the original text with as much clarity as possible". To that end, the ancient source texts were exhaustively scrutinized at every level (word, phrase, clause, sentence, discourse) to determine its original meaning and intention. After wards, using the best language tools available, the semantic and linguistic equivalents were translated into as readable a text as possible. "

This edition does not contain the Deuterocanonical books (Also known as the Apocrypha)
To the best of my knowledge there isn't a Catholic edition of the HCSB.

My Personal Opinion
I absolutely love the cover, I've always been a big fan of camouflage. I also really like how well this Bible matches my woodland camo purse which is just too cute. The size & weight of this Bible makes it easy to travel with. Even though I'm not a hunter or fisherman, I have really enjoyed this Bible. I found the hunter's & fisherman's notes to be very interesting. In "The bear facts" section I learned that there is a special type of pepper spray for bears , and that pepper spray is your best defiance against bears. This is really good to know. There are many interesting sections in this Bible. This Bible would make a great gift for anyone who enjoys the outdoors.

ESV Compact Bible Wild Rose (Floral Design): Published by Good News & Crossway

About the binding & cover
I'm really impressed with the cover of this Bible, the cover feels more like leather instead of artificial leather. The cover is made from Trutone, an artificial leather which is soft and flexible. Trutone is a high quality artificial leather which should prove to be close in durability to bonded leather. Artificial leather book covers such as this haven't been on the market long enough to know for sure. The European hand-stitching around the edges of the cover adds to the durability of this Bible. Size: 3.75 x 5.75 inches x 3/4 thick

What’s inside?
The text in this edition of the compact ESV is 6.2-point type, which is about average for compact Bibles. There is a deluxe edition of the compact ESV with larger 6.55-point type text, if your looking for a more readable edition. The format of this edition is Double-column, paragraph format. I do not recommend using highlighters in this Bible. If you would like to highlight passages I recommend crayola color pencils they work best on thin paper. The paper also has a semi-transparent quality. The pages are edged with silver gild, which matches the cover & silver ribbon marker very well.

Included with this Bible is a Free ESV Bible Resource software, You can order a free CD of the program or download the program online. The program comes with two Bible translations the English Standard Version & the King James Version. The program has lots of features, and is expandable.

About this Translation
Since I am not familiar with this translation , I decided to do a little research to learn more about it. The best site I found concerning the ESV is http://www.esv.org/. I am very impressed with the amount of information I found. Below are some helpful articles found at esv.org.

Introduction to the ESV Bible

How Is the ESV Different?
This is a very interesting article it compares the ESV to other popular translations

From KJV to ESV
This article explains how the ESV is part of the KJV tradition.

Verse by Verse Comparisons

This article compares verses from the ESV with verses from other popular translations

The publisher offers many editions & styles of this translation including:ESV Thinline, Compact, Journaling Bible, ESV Classic Reference, Single Column Reference, Wide Margin, Large Print Bibles, The Daily Reading Bible, The One Year Bible, The ESV Children’s Bible, Outreach Bible , Life Discovery Bible, ESV God’s Story Bible, compact TruGrip, Metal BattleZone edition. The ESV also comes in paperback editions & in Pew & Worship editions for churches

To the best of my knowledge there isn't a Catholic Edition of the ESV. It would be nice to find a Catholic edition with cool cover styles like the ones mentioned above.

My Personal Opinion
I love the style of the cover its nice to see beautiful cover styles for Bibles. Some other beautiful styles are the Celtic Cross Design, Crown Design,Filigree Design, Diamond Design, and Vine Design . I like the way this Bible feels in my hands, it has a nice leathery feel. The compact size of this Bible makes it a good choice for traveling. This Bible fits very well in my purse, with out taking up much room.

Wild About Horses NIV: Published by ZonderKidz

This cute Bible is designed to inspire girls who love horses. In this Bible are beautiful photos of horses, accompanied by inspirational thoughts and scripture verses to help girls deal with a variety of issues including love, friendship, faith, strength, and more. Although the Wild About Horses Bible is primarily designed for girls ages 9-12, anyone who loves horses can appreciate the design & quality of this Bible.

About the binding & cover
The cover is made from Italian duo-tone which is a soft flexible artificial leather. Italian duo-tone is a good quality artificial leather which should prove to be close in durability to bonded leather. Artificial leather book covers such as this haven't been on the market long enough to know for sure. Italian duo-tone comes in many colors, and feels more durable then most artificial leathers. Size: 4.6 wide x 6.7 high x 1 deep in. | 117 wide x 170 high x deep 25 mm

What’s inside?
Through out this Bible you'll find 12 beautiful, full-color photos of horses, accompanied by inspirational thoughts and Scripture verses. Based on the themes of love, peace, friendship, beauty, strength and faith. This Bible is a Red letter edition with the words of Christ in red text. The text is average size for a compact Bible. This Bible does have subject headings which I find to be a blessing, sadly so many compact editions don't have subject headings . I do not recommend using highlighters in this Bible. If you would like to highlight passages I recommend crayola color pencils they work best on thin paper. The paper also has a semi-transparent quality. The pages are edged with gold gild , which matches very well with the design of the cover & the built in ribbon marker very well.

The One Year Bible for Women NLT: Published by Tyndale House Publishers

About the binding & cover
The cover is made from TuTone burgundy artificial leather & pink fabric. The artificial leather has a very nice feel, which feels more like bonded leather than artificial leather.

What’s inside?
This edition has a very interesting format, instead of the usual order of the books this Bible is divided into 365 sections. One section for each day of the year, this format is meant to help you read the entire Bible in one year. Following this layout you could read the entire Bible in one year, with as little as fifteen minutes a day devoted to reading. Each fifteen minute reading includes a portion from the Old Testament, the New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs. Some passages of Scriptural are highlighted to help you focus on a key thoughts in each day’s reading. You’ll also find encouraging inspirational thoughts through out this Bible. The pages are done in a very feminine design, with certain passages highlighted in pink. This edition as silver gilded page edges & a built in pink ribbon marker. I do not recommend using highlighters in this Bible because of the thinness of the paper. The paper also has a slightly transparent quality about it.

About this Translation.
The New living Translation (NLT) was completed and published in 1996. The Second Edition of the New Living Translation (also called the NLTse) was released in 2004.This edition of The One Year Bible for Women New Living Translation is the Second Edition. The New Living Translation is written in everyday English, which makes reading seem very natural. This translation is both a Formal equivalence and Dynamic equivalence. Dynamic equivalence translations are good for casual reading, & are also helpful when studying hard to understand passages. If you would like to learn more about the New Living Translation check out http://www.newlivingtranslation.com/ . This sites FAQ page has lot of information about the New Living Translation http://www.newlivingtranslation.com/05discoverthenlt/faqs.asp

My Personal Opinion
This Bible makes daily reading easy, all you have to do is just turn to today’s date & start reading. The readings take about fifteen minutes. But If your really short on time you could always read part of the section in the morning & the other part in the evening. When I read the title one year Bible I didn’t think that they meant this type of format, but this was defiantly a good surprise. The One Year Bible comes in many different editions & translations . This edition of The One Year Bible for Women NLT comes in paperback, hardback & imitation leather. If your looking for a daily devotional, Bible this would defiantly be a good choice. This Bible would make a wonderful Mother's day gift.

The GNT Catholic Bible: Published by The American Bible Society

About the binding & cover The cover is made of an artificial leather called Leatherette. Leatherette is a form of artificial leather, usually made by covering a fabric base with plastic. The fabric can be made of a natural or a synthetic fiber which is then covered with a soft PVC layer. The cover on the Bible is very pliable, but it doesn't feel quite as leathery as some over types of artificial leather. (Personally I don't see this as an issue) I love the two tone design of this Bible it's nice to see a Catholic Bible with a more modern design. Over all the cover & binding seem to be very good quality. The Size of this Bibe is 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" x 1 1/2"

Whats in side?
In this edition of the GNT the deuterocanonical books are arranged in the order most familiar to Roman Catholics. (Which I find to be a blessing, it can be so frustrating trying to find Daniel 13 in some Catholic editions.) At the front of each book you'll find Book Introductions and Outlines. Through out the GNT Catholic Bible are illustrations by Annie Vallotton. I found myself flipping through the pages to see the illustrations. As you can see from my photos the illustrations are simple yet interesting. There is over 600 of Annie Vallotton's Illustrations in this edition. The text is a comfortable size at 9 points. This Bible has subject headings in bold lettering. The paper is very thin, I do not recommend using highlighters in this Bible. The paper also has a semi-transparent quality, which can make reading difficult in certain lighting. The pages have silver gilted edges, which matches the design of the cover & the built in ribbon marker very well.

  5. Word List

About this Translation.
The Good New Translation was previously known as the Today's English Version (TEV) and as the Good News Bible (GNB). The GNT is a Dynamic equivalence translation it's very easy to read, making ita very good translation for someone who is learning English or for a young person. Dynamic equivalence translations are also helpful when studying hard to understand passages.
I find it very interesting how both Protestants & Catholics have made use of this translation, its nice to see Protestants & Catholics working together. The below text was found on Wikipedia

"The GNB has been a popular translation. By 1969, Good News for Modern Man had sold 17.5 million copies. By 1971, that number had swelled to 30 million copies. It has been endorsed by Billy Graham and Christian groups such as the Roman Catholic Church, the Southern Baptist Convention, the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, and the Presbyterian Church (USA) [2]. The GNB is one of the authorized versions to be used in the Episcopal Church.[3] Excerpts from the New Testament were used extensively in evangelistic campaigns, such as the Billy Graham crusades and others, from the late 1960s right through to the early 1980s. In 1991, a Gallup poll of British parishioners showed that the GNB was the most popular Bible version in that nation. In 2003, the GNB was used as the basis for a film version of the Gospel of John. In 2008, Swedish group Illuminated World paired the text of the GNB with contemporary photography for the English translation of Bible Illuminated: The Book.[4]In the Philippines, it is the most popular version of the bible for both Catholics and Protestants as it is the cheapest bible available. The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines used this translation for the English version of their Basic Ecclessial Community Bible."

My Personal Opinion
This so far is the only Catholic edition of an Dynamic equivalence translation I had the opportunity to review. I like this Bible because it's easy to read & very direct. I recommend this Bible to any one who is looking for a Dynamic equivalence translation.

This Edition can be found at the links below.

The Chronological Study Bible NKJV: Published by Thomas Nelson

I've posted a short review, but after using this Bible for weekly study I feel that a more in depth review is needed. This is the most useful Study Bible I have ever owned. The books are in chronological order arranged by the dates that Biblical events are believed to have happened. Sadly no one knows for sure the exact dates, but its still very interesting.

About the binding & cover
This Bible is hard backed, the binding appears to be glued not sown.
The only color I've seen this Bible available in color is burgundy.

Whats in side?
Each page of this Bible is beautifully designed to look ancient, like a papyrus scroll. There are lots of beautiful photos of places you read about in the Bible. There are also photos of ancient artifacts & beautiful art work. The paper is a good quality, its thinner than most books but thicker than most Bibles. I do not recommend highlighting in this Bible, the pages are to thin for highlighting. But color pencils would work fine. Personally I like the design of the pages too much to highlight them. There are lots of notes, facts & time lines in this Bible. There are fifteen different categories of notes ranging from Culture and Customs to Medicine, Science, Technology & even the Supernatural .

About this Translation.
The New King James Version is a modern translation of the Bible published by Thomas Nelson. Commissioned in 1975 by Thomas Nelson Publishers, 130 respected Bible scholars, church leaders, and lay Christians worked for seven years to create a completely new, modern translation of Scripture, yet one that would retain the purity and stylistic beauty of the original King James Version.

(Note: Thomas Nelson publishing did NOT send this Bible as part of their book review program. My husband gave me this Bible as a Christmas gift.)

NAB Catholic Companion Edition Giant Print : Published by Fireside Catholic Publishing

My husband gave me this Bible in Aug of 2007. This is a very nice Bible but I would like to point out that a Companion Edition isn't the same as a study Bible. The notes of a study Bibles are way more in depth than that of a Companion Edition. Personally I didn't find the notes to be very helpful in this edition. That said this is a very fine quality Catholic Bible.

About the binding & cover
The cover is a new type of flux leather, its very soft like the high quality genuine leather Bibles.
This Bible has a very nice, high quality feel. The Crucifix on the front & the Rosary on the back are embossed into the cover. Fireside Catholic Publishing is the only company that publishes Bibles with a Pray-along Rosary embossed in the cover.

Whats in side?
The text is 14 point GIANT print. The pages are make of high quality paper, with Gold-gilded edges & Silk Ribbon Marker.

In The front

About this Translation.
This Bible is the New American Bible with Revised New Testament and Psalms. This is the most popular Catholic Bible translation..The New American Bible is an English Bible translation that was produced by members of the Catholic biblical scholars in cooperation with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The original languages were translated into English by the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine according to the principles of Vatican II for use in the liturgy.

I highly recommend this Bible to all my Catholic friends

NIV New Testament: Published by Zondervan

To view the photos at their full size click on "see full album". Then move your mouse over the photo, your mouse pointer will look like a little magnifiglass, then click the photo. The photos at their full size are pretty detailed. This is a cute pocket New Testament, I found this one at wal-mart for only $3 dollars. They come in three colors pink, white & baby blue, would make a nice Easter gift

About the binding & cover
The cover is made from a very stiff flax leather. The binding appears to be glued. This is a good New Testament for the price.

Whats in side?
The writing is small compared to my RSV-CE, its readable but I wouldn't recommend this New Testament for study. (After reading 2 chapters my eyes began to hurt) That said this would be a good travel Bible for light reading. Because of its size this New Testmant will easly fit in most pockets or purses.
